In recent years I’ve been gradually adding generals and HQs to my Boxer Rebellion and colonial forces. I’ve done most of them and decided it was about time I got a Vietnamese general to lead his forces against French colonialism in the 1870s and 1880s. Although I couldn’t get a 20mm figure of a Vietnamese commander, I did find a figure I could convert fairly easily. I decided I’d like a commander and an accompanying flag bearer, mounted on a small rectangular base that would fit into one of the elephant howdahs I’ve got for my Vietnamese. After a bit of research I thought I’d make a parasol bearer instead of a flag bearer, since parasols were also used by higher ranking officers. For the general, I used a Tumbling Dice Miniatures WW1 Russian artillery officer in a cap and greatcoat. I removed his cap and replaced it with a sun hat made from Milliput, topped off with a Milliput feather decoration.
