I once again have a functioning 8-track player, so now I can play my grandfather’s old Sons of the Pioneers1 cartridges as well as knock off Monkees and Beatles groups doing covers. Yay! It involved opening up my Lear Jet H-300, poking around a bit, and finally determining it was just a belt that needed replacing. I hadn’t played anything on it since 15 years ago, so it’s not a surprise it needed replacing. Thankfully, the always awesome Turntable Needles was there for me and hooked me up with a new one. I had to measure the belt path with a string and then use calipers to measure the width and height of the belt in order to find the right one. Now that it’s working, I’m tempted to record some of my own songs to a blank 8-track and to fix up some of the tapes I’ve got where parts have started to degrade.
