I saw today that Plex is increasing the cost of its lifetime pass by a truly eye-watering jump of US$500, taking the price from US$249.99 to US$749.99. I’m a Plex lifetime pass holder. I bought it at what now seems to be a bargain basement bin price of S$157, which I think was probably around US$120. I still think Plex is the easiest and most user-friendly way to set up a home library of media that can be accessed anywhere, and that Plexamp provides the best way to experience music, but I also think that new price for a lifetime pass is ludicrously out of reach for most anyone. My first reaction on seeing the news was along the lines of, are they for real? It’s like they don’t want anyone to buy it. Then I realised that that, of course, is the point. They don’t want anyone to buy it, they want people to take out a monthly subscription to provide a regular revenue stream instead.
