I am a weak, weak person: dangle a librarian protagonist, and a would-be protagonist in a historical romance who is not a duke/marquis/earl/viscount somewhere near me, and I’ll jump on that book. Hard. Sadly, shortly after the reading slump from hell hit, and the book languished in the humongous digital TBR shelves for well over a year. Fortunately, that’s what the TBR Challenge is for, and with this month’s theme being beginnings, this one–first in a trilogy, new-to-me author–fits the bill to a T. Unfortunately, I could not finish it. Beware: hints of spousal abuse; phonetic accent to denote ethnicity; suicide; a bit of violence; DNF review.
