Since we’re on the topic of the birthday problem, I wanted to share a story from my review of Dan Davies’s book, Lying for Money: On p.124, Davies shares an amusing story of the unraveling of a scam involving counterfeit Portuguese banknotes: “While confirming them to be genuine, the inspector happened to find two notes with the same serial numbers—a genuine one had been stacked next to its twin. Once he knew what to look for, it was not too difficult to find more pairs. . . .” The birthday problem in the wild!
