There’s no doubt that Shin Megami Tensei is a great game. It has an engaging, high stakes, story that dares to imagine its audience will catch references to divine beings big and small across multiple faiths and mythologies. The actions I take have permanent, long-term consequences, determining not just the fate of the world but where I’m allowed to go and who is willing to ally with me when I get there. I am as likely to talk my way out of a fight with demons as I am to spray them with bullets. But some versions are greater than others, with this Mega CD remake by Sims my personal favourite. It’s almost like “Shin Megami Tensei: Deluxe”, the original polished up and refreshed in ways that are subtle yet significant, the kind of thing that makes me rush off to double-check the SNES original one more time, because surely it had… ah.
