Wing of Airplane Over Clouds by Alexandre Saraiva Carniato (Pexels)I have a confession to make. Despite having been on hundreds of plane flights, my anxiety still does the twisties when we hit turbulence. Something about knowing we're in this metal can getting jostled around with miles between us and the ground lodges itself into my monkey brain and doesn't let go. If you've ever crossed the equator in a plane in the fall, you know exactly what I mean. I get why so many turned to the mercy of gods in situations like these. It's soothing to surrender control to the higher power, because it lets us feel safe. But my agnostic heart can't make the universe omnipotent, and it was a long time ago that I realized that the religion I was brought up in was not the salve to all life's problems like it wanted to be. (Not to mention, creation myths butt up directly against physics, evolution, and the big bang... and I'm a scientist!) Alas, no prayers to Ouranos to keep the flying can in the sky…
