When i was about eleven or twelve years old, i remember sitting in the library during silent reading hour when one of my classmates asked, “did anyone see where i put my smart water?”. Recently, i’ve been reminded of this little vignette multiple times, both online and in the real world, because i keep seeing people write things like “i explore this topic in more detail on my substack”, or say things like “i have a substack, you should follow me”. Substack describes itself as a “new media app” and “the subscription network for independent writers and creators”. Recently, they’ve added new features like microblogging but i’m not going to get into that, because as far as i can tell their attempts to take on twitter, youtube, and everything else at the same time are still not going so well, and when people talk about substack, what they tend to mean is that they can publish long-form articles online, that people can subscribe to.
