A Different Role, Not a Faster One A staff engineer’s day used to be easy to describe. In the morning, you would work through a hard implementation detail. After lunch, you would review design choices with the team. In the afternoon, you would merge code, answer questions, and move on to the next change. The visible work and the valuable work were usually strongly correlated. While it looks similar today on the calendar, it is different in substance.
