I’ve been working my way thru The Wheel of Time book series and once again Nynaeve stands out as not only one of my favorite characters in the series but possibly of any series that I’ve read to date. Her progression thru her character arc is great and it feels like every single bit of it is has been hard fought and earned. Mild spoilers possible ahead. I can see how Nynaeve could be off-putting for some people due to her abrasive nature and extreme stubbornness, especially early on in the books. After some of her point-of-view sections, however, it all starts to feel more like defense mechanisms to me. She’s exceptional in just about every way but is often dismissed for various reasons. For being too young, for being too inexperienced, and in many cases for her abrasive and stubborn nature itself, which has inevitably led to a lot of self-doubt.
