Visual Music talk at Tate Modern July 27 2018Presented by 4:3 as part of the Uniqlo Tate Late seriesThere is a subset of experimental animation that is abstract and that practitioners and scholars call “visual music”I'm not an expert or scholar, I'm an enthusiast – and it's a relatively recent enthusiasm.I'm going to talk first about how I got into it this whole area of experimental animation. Being a music critic and all, unsurprisingly it’s through music that I got drawn into this worldOne of my great passions for 20 years now, is avant-garde electronic music, musique concrete, tape music – the post-WW2 vanguard I’m just obsessed with this area and pursued it into all kinds of obscure zones – I'm constantly staggered that SO much of it was made, both within the academy and by lone DIY weirdos – and it’s a global phenomenon, with amazing work done in Eastern Europe and Latin America and Japan....And I’ve been aided in my quest for more esoteric and arcane electronics by this label…
