On my phone i have an app called oss dict. It’s a fork of aard2, which i had on my phone before it, that updates the interface a bit. I also have the entirety of english wiktionary downloaded. (In the past i also had the entirety of wikipedia downloaded, but that’s quite a bit bigger and storage is tight). This is without a doubt my favourite thing to have on my phone. I don’t need to rely on an internet connection or search engines; i can type pretty much any word, in any language, and immediately get access to its definition, etymology, and related words in other languages. I’m not anti-smartphone, although i do think they cause a lot of problems. Having a device that allows me to store the world’s biggest dictionary and search through it instantly is, in my opinion, a single argument that trumps anything a smartphone naysayer could say.
