The writing prompt today asked for the first thing that came to mind, which feels like a system with very few safeguards. Okay, I’ll bite. The first thing that came to mind was: do stairs ever feel smug? Not structurally. Emotionally. Because if you think about it, stairs are just a series of small achievements stacked on top of each other, quietly judging you for not taking them. Every time you walk past and choose the elevator, they’re there, being all “fine, I guess we’re not growing today.” And by we, they mean you. And elevators? Deeply suspicious. Just a box that says, “Stand still and trust me,” which feels like something stairs would never ask of you. Stairs want effort. Stairs want eye contact. Stairs want you to feel your decisions. Stairs demand personal development. And good knees. Also, stairs never trap you between floors. They simply present the situation: “Up or down. Commit.” I respect that. I don’t like it. But I respect it. Well… you asked. .
