For most people, regular cheapie consumer grade headphones are more than adequate. I used them for years. But I also make and mix music, and the quality of headphones influences the technical quality of the mix. Therefore, I'm familiar with boutique and high-end professional grade cans (over the ear headphones to most people). I've been happily using Beyerdynamic DT 250 cans for more than a decade. Long-used in studio settings, Beyerdynamics are solid and dependable. My 250s have a mostly flat frequency response, so it doesn’t overly excite or inflate any specific frequencies (it isn't completely flat, but way ahead of cheapies). This is ideal for mixing where you want a more accurate presentation of sound. Last night while out, I got to listen to a few tracks through a pair of Audeze LCD X cans, and yeah...they are amazing. Lots of sonic detail, great sound separation, and snappy bass response. They also cost $2000! Not cheap. In fairness, there's less sound quality difference…
