There’s something unique about the way society is right now: It’s less risky to video chat semi-anonymously (1) than to exchange actual contact information. And nowhere is that more evident than in the online- and app-driven dating scene. With apps (and forums and Discord servers and and and) there are now places where we curate the amount of personal information that we share with others. Sometimes that’s a Discord username, or keeping messaging “on app” with a dating app. That way, if someone turns out to be a creep (or worse), your real life is not exposed. I wish that were a joke or exaggeration. I personally know far too many women who turned someone down after a few messages and had that “match” get verbally abusive and threatening.
