Modern Western society has replaced moral language with psychological language. We are an extremely medicalized society. There is an epidemic of overmedication, but also an epidemic of overusing medical and psychological terminology in everyday life. Morality and psychology are both categorical, but they approach human behavior differently. Morality argues what is right and wrong. Psychology explains, labels, regulates, and pathologizes behavior. The problem is that the psychological framework often has no real aim toward moral improvement. It explains behavior rather than correcting it. The response becomes medication, diagnosis, regulation, and an oversimplified victim mindset of “I have this disorder, therefore I cannot do this because I am neurodivergent.” And this goes beyond mental disorders.
