I recently stumbled upon this cover of “I’ll Be Around” by The Spinners. This was recorded a couple of years go by Daryl Hall, Ty Taylor, and friends as part of “Live From Daryl’s House” YouTube series. There are many things I enjoy about this video. First, the commentary prior to the jam session is interesting. I had always noticed something was off by the way younger people were choosing to sing, I didn’t realize they were trying to emulate auto-tune. Now that I’ve heard these comments, I can’t help but hear this in a young person’s voice. Secondly, the vibes of sheer joy as these folks covered the early 1970s classic gives me chills. I don’t believe the emotion is performative; we’re seeing a group of musicians lose themselves in this moment. It is sheer magic.
