What did you know about this period of Columbian history before you started reading the book? What did you learn? At several different points in the history covered, the United States and the CIA get involved with the political violence. It was… not particularly surprising to see that American interference contributed to the violence. How, if at all, did you reconcile that troubling reality? In what ways did the people’s differences in political ideology fuel the violence and in what ways was it kind of beside the point? What did you think of Esther’s politics? How does the family’s social and financial standing both protect and expose them to violence? What effect has political ideology had in the relationships of your extended family? Which of your political beliefs are non-negotiables and what issues can you consider with more nuance?
