It’s been a few years since 2023, when I last wrote about the use of AI. Today we have ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude Code, and many other tools, with new models and capabilities appearing constantly. At this point, it’s becoming less about which AI tool you choose and more about the agents, integrations, and skills those tools can leverage. Personally, I don’t mind the use of AI in the workplace. Many teams actively evaluate these tools and work to ensure they’re being used appropriately and…

Sunday, June 21, 2026 - 21:00 The Lesbian Historic Motif Project There's some thing of a rolling process to setting up and posting these blogs. Even as I am in the middle of posting the sections of Orr's dissertation, I'm working ahead to finish writing up the remainder of the blogs for this document. I have one more work session to complete that work and then I can coast for the rest of the month. It looks like I've timed the blogs precisely to finish the current publication on the last day of…

Hello, loves! The new scheme for Content seems to be working out well. Remaining are two concerns … Well, I say two, though there are surely many things to be concerned about. The two I have in mind are: The upcoming Content items require “instance variables”, such as the cycling flag and time counter for the Animated item, that are not included in the standard batch. We’d like to make them optional. The upcoming items need to be subscribed to some events. We need a way to represent those…

These are some things I’ve wandered across on the web this week. 🔖 RFC 9958: Post-Quantum Cryptography for Engineers The advent of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC) would render state-of-the-art, traditional public key algorithms deployed today obsolete, as the mathematical assumptions underpinning their security would no longer hold. To address this, protocols and infrastructure must transition to post-quantum algorithms, which are designed to resist both traditional and…

Hello, loves! I think we can do without the info object entirely. Let’s find out. Bear takes a nibble but I think we’re OK. It occurred to me that we can probably put an item’s extra variables right in the procedure that creates a CombinedContent item, and reference them using nonlocal inside the callbacks. It turns out that our existing callback test actually demonstrates the idea: def test_subscriptions(self): count = 0 def increment(*, content, state): nonlocal count print('counting') count…

What’s your top tip to be successful in life? Okay, WordPress. Slow down. I mean, people love asking this question because they expect some profound answer. Wake up at 4:30 a.m. Manifest abundance. Drink green juice. Read seventeen books a week. Network with billionaires. Become one with your planner. My top tip is much simpler. Lower the bar just enough that you can occasionally step over it. I don’t mean abandon all ambition and spend your days becoming one with the couch cushion. Although…

I eked out a little more listening time this week (but still not enough!) to Abdullah Ibrahim who passed away last week. I find his discography confusing, and I don’t know of any real guide to it. As a result, I’ve always restlessly scrolled through it listening to things that I like rather than trying to get a sense for his development as a musician. I have always had a soft spot for Ibrahim’s unusual 1977 recording The Journey which featured among others Don Cherry and Hamiet Bluiett (and Roy…

• I've been spending my free time reading the various specifications that I implicitly lean on daily for my software dev. • Recently it has been the posix spec. • In our pico.sh irc channel we've been idly chatting about what we like from our shells as well as exploring the variants that have spawned over the decades. It kind of crazy to think that some of these shell implementations have existed for that long. As I was exploring these shells and my own shell journey, I started to realize…

I used to live in a neighborhood with elderly power and phone infrastructure. The 120V, 60 Hz main power fluctuated during spring and summer. I bought an APC Back UPS 1500 uninterruptible power supply in early June, 2020 to get whatever server I was using back then through the inevitable series of short power losses.

Tonight's Movie: The Little Princess (1939) - A Film Masters Blu-ray Review (Laura's Miscellaneous Musings)
The Frances Hodgson Burnett novel A LITTLE PRINCESS was one of my very favorite books growing up, and I reread it many times. In fact, I still vividly remember picking out the paperback copy while shopping with my parents at Pickwick Books at South Coast Plaza when I was maybe seven years old, and I own it to this day.I have to admit to avoiding the Shirley Temple film version for most of my life simply because I knew that the screenplay, by Ethel Hill and Walter Ferris, used the book as a…

📺 Widow’s Bay is the best thing I have seen on TV all year, with good comedy, moments that are genuinely scary, callouts to many horror classics and a stellar cast. Will watch again.

So anyone who has spent considerable time with me has probably learned how much I love a drive in movie theater. Crysta and I started going to them when we lived in Indiana, mostly visiting the Lakeshore Drive In in Monticello (though the now-closed MELS at the Starlight in Mechanicsburg was in our rotation too). When we moved back to Wisconsin, we started going to the Stardust Drive In in Chetek most weekends in the summer months, but it shut down and didn't open for 2025. Last year, for our…

Technology businesses are heavily influenced by waves of technology change, like the rise of the internet or AI. Knowing how to adjust strategy for these changes is one of the most important skills to develop. As technology has advanced, technology waves have become larger, more frequent, and more sudden. In just the last 30 years (less than a full career, literally less than the time between graduation and your first 401k payout) we’ve seen: The rise of the consumer internet, creating massive…

Dual Subways and Flushing – Flushing, New York I got off at my destination in Queens, one stop from the last stop on the Number 7 line, which is a big hint of where my wife and I are going. Have you figured out the destination? Looking east along the subway tracks, I timed a shot as two trains passed each other. The train on the tracks closer to me is heading towards a cluster of buildings that have also sprouted over the last decade. Although not as impressively tall as Long Island City,…

We spent a night in Desolation Wilderness for Luna’s first backpacking trip (and my first return since May 2020). Luna was a champ, and seemed to love the outdoors! So many people commented on her orange backpack (so she could carry her own food, snacks, and camping gear 😅) and the pup made many friends (both dogs and human) while on the trail. Since we drove from Berkeley, we rode a water taxi to the far end of Echo Lake to make our hike in a bit shorter -- and got to saw a small black bear…

Our 2026 garden: planting carrots and cucumbers, trellis added, and food forest progress (The Re-Farmer)
Well, my day of rest yesterday, such as it was, is done and today, I got some work done in the garden. The first thing I wanted to do was plant thew carrot seed tape I’d picked up. These went into the trellis bed, next to the Rainbow Mix carrots. The boards that had been … Continue reading Our 2026 garden: planting carrots and cucumbers, trellis added, and food forest progress

A lot has been said about the apparent overload of cars flooding the LEGO® Technic theme in recent years, and I have to agree with the critics. There is one clear exception for me though: the Ultimate Car Concept Series are a staple of the theme. This is where the LEGO® Technic System aspect has the space and budget to really shine, and I am always impatiently surviving the 2 years between each edition. This year, Swedish car manufacturer Koenigsegg has the honor of providing a model for us to…

I am a father of twin boys. There is a question I often think about. It often appears as a midlife crisis where I am not sure when I became a man responsible for a family. It looked so easy for my father. It was as if he was born into it. He was a leader, a strong man, one that an entire community could rely on. When does that kick in for me? When do I become this leader? Or have I already become? That's what I was thinking when I wrote this short story about my father 10 years ago. I couldn't…

I sort of hate digital photos. They collect into these massive folders, and they sit there, and they're safe (as long as they're backed up!), and you technically can look through them ... but they're just not a good way to hold memories, not for me at least. They're too fleeting. For years, I've wanted to get in the habit of printing photos and putting them in an album to just collect memories from my life. I graduated high school in 2010, an I'm 34 now. I only have photos going back to 2017. I…

I pray to the British only that I be beheaded rather than hanged for this. Project Gutenberg has more than 75,000 books in the public domain that you can read on its website. However, the public-domain audiobooks are sometimes lacking. In March, Fish Audio released S2, which provides adequate-sounding text-to-speech. Here is a sample of King Charles’s voice reading the title of South, generated using S2. Cloning a voice is fairly simple, you just need ~30 seconds of reference speech:

We had 2 wins so far which which was far more successful than our previous pool play…
